History
- The 152,000-square-foot building opened at the southwest corner of South Salina and West Onondaga streets in 1929, becoming one of Syracuse’s most prominent office buildings.
- The building stands 12 stories high and was designed by Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon architects, the same New York City firm that designed the Empire State Building two years later.
- The building got its name from electronic chimes on its roof that rang every 15 minutes and played a two- to three-minute melody every hour.
- The building has been home to hundreds of commercial tenants over its one hundred-year history, including several architectural firms, law offices, public TV stations, and the US Army.
- In the early 2000s, the building was partially converted into apartments after all commercial tenants had vacated the property.
- In 2023, SEED Syracuse purchased the Chimes building and began its current restoration.
Mission
The Chimes Building is being redeveloped by SEED Syracuse Inc. A 501c3 community development group, into a mixed-use, mixed-income property at the southern edge of Downtown Syracuse, which has seen over $150m in reinvestment over the last decade.
SEED Syracuse Inc. renovated the Chimes building with a vision for creating more truly mixed-income apartments, meaning people of all means can live in the units regardless of income. All units are built to the same standard. With a significant housing shortage in Central New York and a growing desire for people of all walks of life to live in Downtown Syracuse, SEED Syracuse Inc. aims to provide quality apartments for people to call home.
